For Dr. Alexandra D., the journey to becoming a licensed psychologist felt less like a linear path and more like an uphill battle against an invisible, exhausting weight. Like many in the field, she had worked tirelessly for years, but when it came time to prepare for the EPPP, she hit a wall that felt impossible to climb alone.
The Weight of Overwhelm
When Dr. D. first began her EPPP exam prep, she was provided with the standard, industry-leading study materials. The package arrived in the mail—a mountain of heavy, intimidating books. She recalls looking at them and feeling a profound sense of paralysis: "What am I supposed to do with all this? All these books? It was really overwhelming."
She tried to force herself to fit into the conventional, neurotypical mold of study prep. She spent hours at her desk, but her brain felt at war with her goals. She struggled to get out of bed, to find the motivation to start, and to keep her focus from wandering to her pets, her phone, or the random noise of a passing car. After a disappointing first attempt on Halloween in 2023, the crushing weight of the experience left her feeling like she was simply going through the motions without truly understanding the material. "I didn't feel like I knew really anything on that first exam," she admits. "Maybe, like, five questions."
The Turning Point
The realization that her current study habits were failing her was the spark that ignited a change. She knew she couldn't keep "hacking" it alone. Through a recommendation from a friend, she discovered the Crush that Exam program. What finally convinced her to take the leap wasn't just a promise of success, but the discovery that the program’s founder was also neurodivergent. For the first time, she felt seen. She realized she didn’t need more books; she needed a system that actually accommodated how her mind worked.
A New Approach to Success
Joining the program was a pivot point. Dr. D. moved from isolated, anxious studying to a community-based approach. She found that the "glue" of the program the parallel study sessions transformed her daily habits. By using body doubling, she finally had the accountability she needed to stay at her desk. She began implementing the Pomodoro method, which helped her manage her energy and avoid the burnout that had previously left her mentally depleted after only a few hours of work.
Beyond the techniques, she found emotional refuge in the group coaching sessions. "I really like the group coaching because I feel like that helped with managing anxiety and really, like, talking with others and realizing, 'Oh, okay, I'm not alone in this situation,'" she shares.
The Transformation
The year that followed was not just about passing an exam; it was a year of profound personal metamorphosis. Dr. D. navigated job changes, family dynamics, and the deep, often painful work of processing her own self-doubt in therapy. She stopped trying to force herself to learn in a way that didn't fit, and instead, she allowed herself to grow.
"I think the time was necessary," she reflects. "It wasn't just studying for an exam. It was doing, processing and doing all these other things as well."
The Outcome: A New Beginning
When she finally crossed the finish line and passed her EPPP, the victory was about much more than a score. Dr. D. emerged from the experience as a fundamentally different person—more self-assured, more resilient, and deeply in tune with her own needs.
Today, that heavy weight on her shoulders has been replaced by excitement for the future. She is preparing to finish the licensing process, and she and her husband are looking forward to buying a home and starting their family. She describes the feeling of freedom as palpable; she can go to the store or hang out with friends without the persistent, nagging voice telling her she "should" be studying.
For those currently in the trenches of their own licensing journey, Dr. D. offers a gentle, hopeful reminder: "Do your research. Figure out if it’s the right program for you. These programs that we pay so much money for, they just don’t work for everyone. And we can take that material and study it, but sometimes we just need a little extra help to get by, so. And that’s okay."
Her story stands as a testament to the fact that while the EPPP is a professional hurdle, it is also a gateway to self-discovery. With the right support, you don't just survive the exam you transform because of it.
